Getting Ready for 2nd Grade: A Simple Summer Plan for Success

Getting ready for 2nd grade transition from 1st to 2nd grade is an exciting milestone. Not only are students growing more independent, but they’re also expected to build on foundational skills and tackle more complex concepts. Because of this, it’s incredibly helpful to set aside time during the summer to review, refresh, and prepare.

While summer should absolutely include sunshine, rest, and relaxation, it can also be a golden opportunity for gentle academic practice. In fact, with the right tools and strategies, you can support your child without turning summer into a second school year.

Let’s explore how you can help your child get ready for 2nd grade in a stress-free, effective, and even enjoyable way.

🌞 Why Summer Review Matters

Although it may seem like a long break is ideal, summer learning loss—often called the “summer slide”—is a real challenge for many students. In particular, children can lose up to two months of progress in math and reading over the summer. As a result, the first few weeks of school often involve reteaching instead of moving forward.

However, the good news is this: You don’t need hours of instruction every day. A short, focused routine (even just 15–20 minutes) can keep your child’s brain sharp while still allowing plenty of time for summer fun.

Additionally, students who review over the summer often return to school feeling more confident. That emotional boost is just as valuable as the academic one.

You don’t need to do a thing! I created a packet that will give you everything you need! It is updated and ready to print!

This updated packet includes everything your child needs — plus a bonus I couldn’t leave out!

📚 Key Skills to Review Before 2nd Grade

As you begin to think about summer learning, it’s helpful to know which skills are most essential. Rather than trying to cover everything, focus on areas that form the core of 1st grade learning. These provide a solid foundation for what’s coming next.

Reading & Writing Skills

  1. Trick or Sight Word Fluency
Children should be able to quickly recognize common high-frequency words. Because these words often don’t follow typical phonics rules, repetition and games are helpful.
  2. Decoding & Phonics
Can your child sound out unfamiliar words? Are they confident with vowel teams, digraphs, and blends? If not, decodable readers and phonics games can offer support.
  3. Reading Comprehension
Ask your child to retell stories in their own words. Who were the characters? What happened at the beginning, middle, and end? Practicing this skill over the summer will help build confidence for classroom discussions.
  4. Writing Complete Sentences
Encourage your child to write simple journal entries, lists, or short stories. In addition, review punctuation and capitalization rules.

Math Skills

  1. Place Value
In 2nd grade, students will work with hundreds, tens, and ones. Reviewing tens and ones will make the jump smoother.
  2. Addition & Subtraction Fluency
Can your child solve problems within 20 quickly and accurately? Flashcards, dice games, and math apps can all help sharpen these skills.
  3. Word Problems
Help your child practice solving word problems using objects, drawings, or number lines. Understanding what the problem is asking is half the battle!
  4. Time and Money
Review how to tell time to the hour and half hour. In addition, help your child identify coins and count combinations of money.

By focusing on these areas, you can ensure your child is ready to thrive in 2nd grade.

🎯 Make Learning Fun (and Simple)

Many families hesitate to tackle summer learning because they worry it will become a battle. Fortunately, there are several ways to make learning fun, flexible, and engaging.

1. Set a Simple Daily Routine

Although structure is helpful, your routine doesn’t need to be rigid. For example, you might set aside 15 minutes after breakfast or before screen time. The key is consistency. In other words, it’s better to do a little each day than to cram everything into one afternoon.

2. Incorporate Movement

Learning doesn’t have to be done at a desk. Hopscotch spelling, sidewalk chalk math problems, or scavenger hunts with vocabulary clues can turn review into play.

3. Use Printables and Hands-On Games

Instead of worksheets alone, consider printable games or interactive activities. For example, roll-and-write math games, card sorting, or phonics puzzles can bring skills to life.

💬 Common Questions Parents Ask

Not at all. The packet is designed for children who are finishing 1st grade. It includes clear instructions and a light introduction to 2nd grade concepts.

“What if we miss a few days?”
That’s okay! The packet is flexible. Use what you can, when you can. A few minutes here and there adds up over time.

“Do I need to sit with my child the whole time?”
Not necessarily. Older students may work independently, while younger ones may benefit from your guidance at the beginning of each task.

In addition to the packet, consider encouraging your child to keep a small learning journal. In it, they can:

  • Write about their day

  • Make up silly stories
  • Log coins they count or clocks they draw

This builds routine while also supporting writing, comprehension, and math.
