   Children should be able to quickly recognize common high-frequency words. Because these words often don’t follow typical phonics rules, repetition and games are helpful.
2. Decoding & Phonics
   Can your child sound out unfamiliar words? Are they confident with vowel teams, digraphs, and blends? If not, decodable readers and phonics games can offer support.
3. Reading Comprehension
   Ask your child to retell stories in their own words. Who were the characters? What happened at the beginning, middle, and end? Practicing this skill over the summer will help build confidence for classroom discussions.
4. Writing Complete Sentences
   Encourage your child to write simple journal entries, lists, or short stories. In addition, review punctuation and capitalization rules.
